Riverside, CA (August 10, 2024) – On Wednesday, August 7, in a tragic development, the passenger of an overturned vehicle involved in an evening crash on County Road 105 was pronounced dead at the scene. Riverhead Police issued a press release informing of this tragic death on Thursday morning. The driver of the overturned vehicle has been charged with felony driving while intoxicated in connection with the incident.
The multi-vehicle collision occurred around 6:15 p.m., resulting in a complete shutdown of County Road 105 in both directions between Flanders Road and Riverside Drive. The crash took place on the north end of the Cross River Drive bridge and involved a total of seven vehicles, including one that overturned and another that sustained significant front-end damage.
Emergency services, including the Riverhead Police, Riverhead Fire Department, Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and Flanders Northampton Volunteer Ambulance, responded promptly to the scene. Firefighters worked diligently to right the overturned vehicle, enabling EMS personnel to access any individuals who may have been trapped inside.
A Suffolk Police Medevac helicopter was dispatched and landed at Indian Island Golf Course to transport one patient to Stony Brook University Hospital. While multiple individuals were injured and transported to local medical facilities, details regarding the number of victims and their current conditions are still pending.
County Road 105 is expected to remain closed for several hours while law enforcement officials conduct a thorough investigation of the accident scene. Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes to avoid traffic delays.
