West Los Angeles, CA – Multi-Vehicle Collision and Car Fire on I-405

West Los Angeles, CA (September 4, 2024) – A serious multi-vehicle collision occurred late Tuesday night in the northbound lanes of the I-405 freeway, just south of Skirball Center Drive. The accident, reported around 9:40 PM, involved at least three vehicles, including a white Tesla sedan and a Kia SUV. One of the vehicles caught fire, leading to significant disruption and prompting a swift response from emergency services. The Los Angeles Fire Department and California Highway Patrol (CHP) were immediately dispatched to the scene, and an ambulance was en route to address any potential injuries.

Initial reports suggest that a white Tesla sedan was fully engulfed in flames, blocking the middle lanes of the freeway. Before emergency responders arrived, two individuals were seen attempting to extinguish the fire with fire extinguishers. Witnesses described the chaotic scene, indicating that the accident may have begun when one vehicle rear-ended another, triggering a chain reaction. The impact caused one of the cars to spin out of control, eventually striking a third vehicle and crashing into the center divider.

The driver of the white Kia SUV, one of the vehicles involved, managed to exit the vehicle before it caught fire. Firefighters quickly worked to put out the flames while CHP officers secured the area and began investigating the cause of the crash. Authorities will likely consider factors such as vehicle speed, road conditions, and driver behavior as they piece together what happened.

As emergency personnel worked to clear the wreckage, traffic on the northbound I-405 near the Getty Center was heavily affected. Vehicles were backed up for several miles as tow trucks were called to the scene to remove the damaged vehicles. A flatbed truck was requested specifically for the Tesla due to the extensive damage caused by the fire.

We hope for a swift recovery for the victims.

I-405 Multi-Vehicle Accidents

West Los Angeles, CA – Multi-Vehicle Collision and Car Fire on I-405The I-405 freeway, one of the busiest highways in California, is notorious for heavy traffic and frequent multi-vehicle accidents. Stretching through the heart of Los Angeles, the freeway sees thousands of commuters every day, making it particularly prone to collisions, especially during rush hours and late at night. Accidents on the I-405 often involve multiple vehicles due to the close proximity of cars traveling at high speeds, increasing the risk of chain-reaction crashes when a vehicle is rear-ended, or drivers fail to react to sudden slowdowns.

Multi-vehicle accidents on this busy freeway are complex and often involve more than two vehicles, making it challenging to determine fault. Law enforcement, such as the California Highway Patrol (CHP), typically needs to reconstruct the accident by collecting witness statements, reviewing video footage, and analyzing damage patterns to understand what caused the crash. Accidents of this nature often result in significant injuries and extensive property damage, emphasizing the dangers of congested roadways like the I-405 in Los Angeles.
