Pedestrian Accidents in Los Angeles and Your Rights

Pedestrian accidents are a growing concern in Los Angeles, one of the most pedestrian-injured cities in the United States. According to the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), over 900 pedestrian fatalities were reported statewide in 2022, with a significant portion occurring in Los Angeles. The OTS study ranked Los Angeles as one of the most dangerous cities for pedestrians in the state, with more than 1,000 pedestrian injuries reported annually.

This increase in accidents is attributed to several factors, including distracted driving, speeding, and inadequate pedestrian infrastructure in certain neighborhoods. Despite efforts to improve safety—such as adding more crosswalks and better street lighting—the city continues to see a rise in accidents, particularly in high-risk areas like South and East Los Angeles.

As the number of pedestrian injuries increases, it is becoming more important for victims to understand their legal rights and seek appropriate support. Pedestrians involved in accidents often face substantial medical bills, lengthy recovery periods, and, in some cases, long-term disabilities. Many victims are unaware that they may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering due to the negligence of drivers or other responsible parties.

In California, victims of pedestrian accidents generally have two years from the date of the incident to file a personal injury claim. However, it’s important to consult an attorney as soon as possible to preserve evidence and ensure that the claim is filed within the necessary time frame.
