Commerce, CA (February 23, 2025) – A high-speed crash in Commerce late Saturday night, February 22, left one person dead and several others injured after a driver fleeing police crashed into a bus stop.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the incident began just after 11 p.m. in Bell Gardens when officers attempted to stop a red sedan at the intersection of 66th Street and Normandie Avenue. The driver refused to yield and sped away, running multiple red lights at dangerously high speeds. CHP officers canceled the pursuit within a minute after determining the driver was traveling too recklessly.
Despite the pursuit ending, the suspect continued driving at speeds over 100 mph. The vehicle eventually slammed into another car stopped at a red light before crashing into a bus stop. Tragically, one person who was believed to be homeless and sleeping on the bench was killed in the impact.
Authorities also confirmed that a pedestrian who was crossing the street at the time suffered severe injuries, requiring the amputation of their legs early Sunday morning. Several others were also hurt in the crash, though the extent of their injuries has not been fully detailed.
The driver of the red sedan, whose identity has not been released, was taken into custody following the collision. Investigators are working to determine all factors involved in the incident.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the victim who lost their life in this horrific crash. Our thoughts are also with those who were injured, and we hope they receive the care they need for their recovery.
Car Accidents in California
California sees thousands of reckless driving accidents each year, many of which involve excessive speed and drivers fleeing law enforcement. High-speed chases are particularly dangerous, often putting innocent pedestrians and other motorists at risk. Sadly, incidents like these can lead to devastating injuries and fatalities.
Here are some of the major risks associated with reckless driving and high-speed chases:
- Pedestrian Vulnerability – Pedestrians are at extreme risk when reckless drivers lose control. In cases where drivers crash into sidewalks, crosswalks, or bus stops, the chances of severe injuries or fatalities increase dramatically.
- Loss of Vehicle Control – When vehicles travel at excessive speeds, drivers have a harder time reacting to sudden changes in traffic or road conditions, leading to devastating crashes.
- Multi-Vehicle Collisions – High-speed crashes often cause secondary collisions, injuring additional motorists and bystanders in the process.
- Increased Fatality Rates – Accidents involving speeds over 100 mph are more likely to result in death due to the sheer force of impact. Even those who survive may suffer permanent, life-altering injuries.
