When Do Parked Trucks Become a Serious Hazard on Los Angeles Highways?
Parked trucks can become dangerous when they are stopped on highway shoulders, especially in high-speed areas. Drivers traveling at freeway speeds may not expect a large commercial vehicle to be stationary ahead, which can significantly reduce reaction time. Even a few seconds of delayed awareness can make the difference between a near miss and a devastating collision.
Limited visibility can make the situation even more hazardous. Curves in the road, poor lighting at night, heavy fog, or glare from the sun can prevent drivers from seeing a stopped truck until it is too late to stop safely. If hazard lights, reflective triangles, or other warning devices are not properly used, approaching motorists may have little warning that a large vehicle is blocking part of the roadway or shoulder.
Crashes involving large trucks lead to severe outcomes due to the significant size and weight difference between commercial vehicles and passenger cars. In some cases, a smaller car can slide under the rear of a trailer in what is known as an underride collision, which may cause catastrophic or fatal injuries. People involved in these crashes may suffer traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord damage, chest trauma, or other life-threatening conditions. The impact can also trigger multi-vehicle collisions, further increasing the risk to everyone on the road.
