Authorities report that 24-year-old Pomona resident Rick Rodriguez was driving a 2013 Honda Accord eastbound in the westbound lanes when he collided head-on with a 2018 Honda Civic. The impact caused Rodriguez’s vehicle to spin out of control, striking a third car.

His condition remains unknown.  The driver of the third vehicle, identified as 47-year-old Veronica Segura from Commerce, suffered minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Due to the severity of his injuries, Rodriguez was released to the hospital for medical treatment. The crash led to a SigAlert, which remained in place until approximately 4:00 a.m. as authorities worked to clear the wreckage and investigate the incident.

With millions of licensed drivers on the road, it’s no surprise that the state sees hundreds of thousands of accidents each year. According to data from the California Office of Traffic Safety, more than 3,500 people lost their lives in traffic collisions last year, with many more seriously injured. Busy city areas like Los Angeles are often hotspots for these types of incidents.

Understanding what follows after an accident is vital, especially when injuries are involved. Here’s more insight into common long-term effects of injuries:

  • Chronic Pain: Even injuries that seem minor at first can develop into long-term pain, particularly in the neck, back, or joints. These ongoing discomforts can interfere with daily routines and work responsibilities.

  • Reduced Mobility: Fractures, torn ligaments, or spinal damage can limit a person’s ability to move freely or return to their normal physical activity levels. Recovery may require prolonged physical therapy.

  • Mental Health Struggles: It’s not uncommon for crash victims to experience depression, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress. Emotional recovery is just as crucial as physical healing and often needs professional attention.

  • Permanent Disability: In more serious cases, individuals may face life-altering injuries that result in a disability, requiring long-term care and changes in lifestyle or employment.

  • Financial Strain: Medical bills, lost wages, and vehicle repair costs can create significant pressure for victims and their families. Insurance may not always cover everything.

  • Sleep Disruption: Pain, stress, and trauma after a crash can severely impact sleep patterns, which in turn can slow physical and emotional recovery.
