Who Can Be Liable for a Dog Attack in Lancaster, CA?
Under California law, a dog owner can be held strictly liable for injuries their animal causes, even if the dog had never bitten anyone before and the owner had no reason to believe it was dangerous.
Injuries from a dog attack can include deep lacerations, nerve damage, and infections that require ongoing wound care and sometimes surgery. Beyond the physical injuries, victims tend to deal with lasting scarring and psychological effects that can take months or longer to work through.
Because California’s strict liability standard doesn’t require proving the owner was negligent, the focus usually shifts to identifying the dog’s owner and confirming the animal was in a public place or lawfully on private property at the time of the attack.
A personal injury lawyer can help gather documentation like animal control reports, witness statements, and medical records to support a claim, while also identifying whether a homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy might cover the resulting damages..
