Catalina Island, CA – Two Killed in Plane Crash Near Divide Rd

Catalina Island, CA (April 10, 2026) – Two people died after a small plane crash on Thursday afternoon, April 9, in a remote area of Catalina Island. The incident occurred near Divide Road, southwest of Avalon.

Emergency units responded around 12:30 p.m. after reports of a downed aircraft. Crews reached the crash site and found the wreckage of an Airplane Factory Sling aircraft.

First responders confirmed that both people on board died at the scene. Officials have not released the identities of the victims.

Authorities closed nearby roads and hiking trails, including the Garden to Sky Trail, while crews worked in the area. The remote location made access more challenging during the response.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA will examine the crash to determine what caused the aircraft to go down. Authorities have not shared additional details about the flight or conditions at the time. The investigation remains active.

We extend our sincere condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.

How Long Families Have to File a Wrongful Death Lawsuit in California?

In California, families have two years from the date of death to file a wrongful death lawsuit. This time limit, known as the statute of limitations, sets a deadline for taking legal action. Acting within this period is important because missing the deadline may prevent a claim from moving forward.

Wrongful death cases often involve reviewing several factors, including how the incident occurred and who may be responsible. These cases can arise from different events, including aviation accidents, vehicle crashes, or unsafe conditions. Gathering information early can help preserve important evidence and clarify what steps may follow.

Families may need to collect records such as medical reports, official findings, and financial documents. These materials can help show the impact of the loss, including expenses and changes in financial support. Keeping organized records can make the process more manageable over time.

A personal injury lawyer can help explain how California laws apply and what options may be available. This may include reviewing documents, identifying deadlines, and outlining the steps involved in filing a claim.
