Mecca, CA (July 23, 2025) – A deadly crash involving a big rig occurred Tuesday afternoon, July 22, east of Mecca, leaving at least one person dead and igniting a brush fire near the Cactus City rest stop.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) said the collision happened at around 12:25 p.m. on eastbound Interstate 10, just past the rest stop. A tractor-trailer reportedly lost control and rolled off the freeway next to an underpass. No other vehicles were involved in the wreck.
According to authorities, the truck’s engine caught fire, which quickly spread to nearby brush. The driver was reportedly able to exit the wreck on their own before the flames intensified. It remains unclear whether the deceased individual was the truck driver or another party.
Riverside County Fire Department crews arrived at the scene within 20 minutes. They found a brush fire burning in a 10-by-10-foot area. Firefighters managed to contain the blaze, but crews stayed at the location for several hours to ensure full control and mop-up.
CHP officers closed westbound lanes of I-10 at Box Canyon Rd for public safety. A SigAlert was issued at 1:05 p.m. due to heavy traffic. The identity of the person who died has not been released. Authorities are still working to determine the exact cause of the crash.
We extend our sincere wishes for recovery to those affected by this tragic event.

Truck crashes can stem from several causes. Driver fatigue, mechanical failure, shifting loads, or poor road conditions are all factors that contribute to these dangerous events. Even a momentary lapse in attention from a truck driver can have devastating consequences. Unlike standard vehicle crashes, big rig accidents are often more complex because they can involve multiple parties, including the driver, the trucking company, maintenance crews, and cargo shippers.
Victims of truck accidents may be entitled to compensation for medical costs, lost wages, pain and suffering, and more. However, trucking companies and their insurers often have legal teams working to limit their liability. That’s why it’s crucial to have a car accident attorney who understands the unique challenges of these cases and can build a strong claim on your behalf.
An attorney can also help gather evidence, such as black box data, driver logs, and vehicle maintenance records, which are often key to proving fault. Time is critical after a truck crash, as this evidence can disappear quickly if not preserved.
