Malibu, CA (July 4, 2025) – A tragic ATV crash claimed the life of 29-year-old Sophia Hutchins on Wednesday, July 2. The accident happened around 11:30 a.m. on Decker Edison Road, near the Malibu home of Caitlyn Jenner.
According to the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station, Hutchins was driving a Polaris all-terrain vehicle when she was rear-ended by another vehicle. The impact caused the ATV to plunge off the side of the road and down a cliff. The vehicle landed on a lower road, where emergency crews later found it overturned.
Responders pronounced Hutchins dead at the scene. Officials confirmed that she was a close friend of Caitlyn Jenner and served as CEO and director of the Caitlyn Jenner Foundation.
Images from the crash site showed the wrecked ATV at the bottom of the cliff alongside several rusted vehicles, suggesting the area may have a history of similar incidents.
Deputies are still investigating what led to the crash. We extend our heartfelt wishes for healing and peace to those affected by this loss.
ATV Accidents in Malibu
All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) offer adventure and off-road fun, but they can also pose serious risks, especially on steep or winding roads like those in Malibu. While commonly used for recreation, ATVs are prone to rollovers and severe crashes due to their high center of gravity and lack of protective features.
Accidents involving ATVs can be deadly, particularly when they collide with larger vehicles or lose control near cliffs or uneven terrain. In California, ATV-related fatalities are not uncommon, and many happen in scenic, mountainous areas. Roads like Decker Edison Rd, with sharp curves and limited visibility, can quickly turn dangerous, especially at higher speeds.
Rear-end collisions can be especially hazardous for ATVs. Unlike regular cars, ATVs often lack the structural reinforcement to protect riders from impact. When struck from behind, these smaller vehicles can be thrown off course or, as in this case, pushed off the road entirely.
Victims of ATV accidents or their families may have legal options. If another driver acted carelessly or failed to maintain a safe distance, they may be held responsible for the resulting harm. In fatal crashes, surviving family members may pursue wrongful death claims to recover damages for funeral costs, lost income, and emotional suffering.
