Los Angeles, CA (April 27, 2026) – A man died early Monday morning, April 27, after a vehicle struck him near South Figueroa Street and West 75th Street in the Vermont Knolls neighborhood of Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the scene just before 3:15 a.m.

Emergency responders found the unidentified victim lying in the roadway and pronounced him dead at the scene. The driver who struck the pedestrian was not present when officers arrived. Authorities could not immediately confirm whether the incident was a hit-and-run, though police requested an air unit to search the surrounding area for the vehicle and driver involved.

The victim’s identity has not been released. Authorities are actively working to locate the driver believed to be responsible for the fatal crash. The investigation remains open and ongoing.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the victim during this difficult time.

What Should Families Do After a Fatal Pedestrian Accident in California?

After a fatal pedestrian accident in California, one of the first steps a family can take is to preserve any available evidence and seek legal guidance as early as possible. Acting quickly can make a significant difference in the outcome of a wrongful death claim.

When a pedestrian dies in a crash — especially a hit-and-run — families often face a difficult path forward. California law allows surviving family members, including spouses, children, and parents, to file a wrongful death claim against the responsible party.

After a hit-and-run accident, if the driver is eventually identified, that person may be held legally accountable for the death. Even in hit-and-run cases where the driver has not yet been found, an attorney can help families explore whether uninsured motorist coverage or other legal options may apply.

Families should gather and preserve as much information as possible in the days following the accident. This includes obtaining the official police report, collecting any available surveillance footage from nearby businesses or traffic cameras, and identifying potential witnesses. Evidence can disappear quickly after a crash, and early action helps protect a family’s ability to pursue a claim.

California sets a two-year deadline for filing a wrongful death lawsuit. Missing that window can permanently close the door on legal options. Consulting an attorney early gives families more time to build a thorough case while also allowing them space to focus on grieving their loss.

A personal injury lawyer can review the police investigation, identify liable parties, and explain what types of compensation may be available. In wrongful death cases, recoverable losses can include funeral expenses, the income the victim would have earned, and the companionship family members have lost.
