One Killed, Three Hurt After Driver Strikes Crowd in Riverside, CA

Riverside, CA (May 26, 2026) – On Sunday afternoon, May 24, a driver struck a crowd near Franklin Avenue and 5th Street in Riverside and left one person dead and three others hurt. The crash happened at 12:39 a.m, and police received multiple calls.

Riverside Police said the driver steered into the crowd, hitting multiple people. One person died at the scene. Two others who were critically hurt were taken to Riverside Community Hospital, and a fourth person was taken to a separate hospital. The severity of that person’s injuries was not confirmed.

As the investigation developed, detectives identified and detained the person responsible and recovered the vehicle involved.

No names were released, neither the person who died nor the driver had been publicly identified at the time of publication. The investigation remains active as detectives continue to piece together the full circumstances of the crash.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the person killed and also wish a full recovery to those injured.

What Is a Wrongful Death Claim After a Fatal Crash in Riverside, CA?

A wrongful death claim in Riverside is a civil legal action that surviving family members can bring when a person dies due to another party’s intentional or negligent conduct. In California, eligible parties include a spouse, domestic partner, or children of the deceased.

When a driver deliberately produces a crash, that intentional act can form the basis of both criminal charges and a separate civil wrongful death claim. A criminal conviction is not required for a civil case to move forward.

Intentional vehicle attacks and high-speed crashes in densely populated areas can result in fatal injuries, traumatic brain injuries, and severe physical trauma that leaves surviving victims facing extended recovery and permanent loss.

For families who have lost someone in a crash of this kind, a wrongful death claim can seek compensation for funeral and burial expenses, loss of financial support, and the loss of companionship and care the deceased provided.

Survivors who were physically hurt may also have separate personal injury claims arising from the same crash. A personal injury lawyer can help families understand which claims apply to their situation and what evidence may be needed to support them.
