What Should Drivers Know About Fatal Hit-and-Run Laws in Los Angeles, CA?
In California, leaving the scene of a crash that resulted in injury or death is a felony. Anyone who strikes a person and flees can face criminal charges that carry significant prison time, particularly when the crash results in a fatality. If you witness a hit-and-run or are involved in one, you are required by law to remain at the scene, provide your information, and render reasonable aid. Failing to do so compounds the legal consequences considerably.
Hit-and-run fatalities are a persistent problem along high-traffic freeway corridors throughout Los Angeles. In 2022, the California Office of Traffic Safety reported 2,701 fatal and injury hit-and.run collisions. On-ramps and intersections can be particularly dangerous due to the mixed traffic patterns of local streets that feed into freeway access points.
Families of people killed in hit-and-run collisions may have legal options even when the responsible driver has not yet been identified. Uninsured motorist coverage under California law may apply in certain hit-and-run situations. A personal injury attorney can help clarify whether a claim is available and what evidence may be useful to gather or preserve.
